"I want to do it exactly this way" always stuck with me.

Because Martyn knows Scott, right? While they'd never really teamed before Limited Life, I'd argue Martyn was one of the people who could be most intimately familiar with what it meant to be loved by Scott well before he was ever the direct target of that love, and even if he hadn't been, Martyn at least got to see it over and over throughout Limited Life.

All of this is to say; Martyn knows that Scott would have just died for him willingly if he asked. We can laugh at Martyn all day for betraying the one person who would have died for him willingly, and hell, I've made a number of jokes about it very recently. But truthfully, I think this was a choice, not an oversight.

Martyn very explicitly didn't want everyone to stand together and hold hands and go "Oh, good luck :D" and have a fair fight where everyone feels good because we're all friends at the end of the day and we tried our best. Martyn very explicitly rejected niceties, rejected allegiances and pacts and honor, this is a death game for a reason. Martyn made a clear point at the end of Limited Life, and I think the idea of Scott dying for him willingly would have gone against it.

I mean, sure, Martyn willing to take sacrifices like that- he did take sacrifices from Scott throughout the season. And if Scott had offered Martyn his final life, Martyn probably would have taken it. But it doesn't make the point as well, does it? That would be very..easy and feel good and honorable, wouldn't it? Continuing the life series tradition of the final players standing next to each other and trying to make a death game sound more palatable before they beat each other to death- which is exactly what Martyn was explicitly commenting on and rejecting when he stabbed Scott and Impulse in the backs and gave a speech about the nature of the game.

Generally, I think Martyn knew Scott would die for him willingly, but I also think Martyn won exactly the way he wanted to and made exactly the point he wanted to in the end by just stabbing Scott instead of asking.

one of my favourite ethubs things is that they both get jealous but bdubs will make it very obvious by being pouty and petty e.g. "you have a new family?" referring to etho "joining" gem and joel's team in WL or his bit on HC about etho's mail being in "love order" or just in general his constant berating of etho for being too good for him/their alliance essentially meanwhile when etho gets jealous he will not say a single word and instead just starts doing the most dramatic/ridiculous things e.g. stealing bdubs and impulse's beds in DL or Scar riding Bdubs in the new WL episode and etho immediately trying* to fucking murder him.

hot take but

i think the life series fandom sometimes suffers from being a bit biased towards angst, and angsty interpretations. it's understandable, the series is a deathmatch after all and there's no end of tragedy that comes from that, but i'd also say angst tends to feel less "cringe" and is easier to depict in fanworks.

as a result, players/teams/events that don't lend themselves to that interpretation can often get overlooked, and alternative interpretations can get overlooked if there's an angsty one that at least sorta works.

i personally notice this a lot with the Pearl/Scott relationship, which is pretty often portrayed as if the first couple episodes of Double Life lasted forever. the potential for angst with these two is obviously there, but there are some really interesting narratives of healing that aren't talked about anywhere near as much. even just within the series—something that doesn't get discussed nearly enough is that 1v2s were the winning strategy for Pearl...in part because it meant Scott was able to recover health for her at a distance. it's such a fascinating reversal of the spiteful "taking damage to annoy your soulmate" they did earlier in the season, but it just doesn't fit if you force the interpretation of Scott hating and harming Pearl all the way to the finale, so it's often just ignored.

there's a lot of examples like that, honestly. some players and teams just don't get a lot of serious content/interpretation in the fandom, and it's almost always because their storylines don't fit a purely tragic narrative very well. and, idk, that just makes me kinda sad! i absolutely love the angst too (DL!Pearl enjoyer so like, no surprise there), but i think there's some missed potential in how the fandom interprets things, and what it takes an interest in at all. people who analyze life series stuff deeply and give positive interpretations you have my entire heart

I genuinely think the next life series could have something to do with older versions of Minecraft because what are they doing with all the Steve skins? Evolife? Probably not I don’t think Grian would do that direct of an Evo reference but Betalife? Having them stay on the same older version? That seems a lot more possible

Based on the chaos that is all these different 'hints' together I'm thinking the Steve skins were for something else, but then still what are they for ???

So like, that scene in Double Life is insane. I don't have the words to analyze it yet so I'm jut going to describe it how I read it because I'm gnawing on it. I cannot believe I forgot this scene ever happened (or somehow skipped it in my earlier watchthroughs of both povs??)

Scott and Pearl had been really getting along all episode, like, they didn't argue much at all, they laughed together frequently, they worried about each other, on multiple occasions they called themselves a team without flinching. When Pearl wanted to go get her stuff, Scott volunteered to go with her, and actually asked Cleo and Martyn to stay back, and the whole time Scott and Pearl are in the tower and antagonizing the red names they really feel like a team.

And then they die. And they recoup in the bunker.

And Pearl..noticed, while they were being chased, that everyone was after Scott, not her. That they had something against Scott, not her. And.."They weren't going after me that entire time, I just feel like..maybe I should take the bigger team here, y'know? I mean you're a great partner and all, but.."

Scott is. Taken off guard. He sounds hurt, for a moment, and if he wasn't taken by surprise, he wouldn't have let himself sound hurt. "Are you gonna ditch me after this?!" Scott asks, and Pearl sounds almost ashamed as she tells him he deserves it; "Scott, come on, look how big that group is! It's just..look, don't make me feel bad, okay? It's my time to ditch you after the first episode, think of it as karma!"

This launches into maybe the most fascinating argument they've ever had about the breakdown of their relationship in episode one.

Scott snaps that from his perspective, this is all Pearl coming "full circle"! After all, she started the season by abandoning him, and now she's doing it again!

Pearl insists she didn't abandon Scott, that Scott abandoned her, and Pearl can't be blamed for spending the episode with Martyn- Scott spent it with Cleo, they both just went to the first person they found!

Scott points out that he and Cleo actually met the other soulmate pairs, they were looking for their soulmates, they knew Pearl and Martyn were their soulmates from almost as soon as they met up because they'd been looking!

Pearl argues that she and Martyn did look, they made that minigame to find their soulmates!

Scott reminds Pearl that they did that at the very end of the episode, after everyone else was "loved and doved up", after Scott and Cleo had ample time to know noone was looking for them!

And then Pearl changes her argument, she tells Scott that Martyn would have died in the nether without her, and that Cleo would have died too, so Scott should be appreciative, really, that Pearl basically saved Cleo! Which..certainly must not have felt like the most coherent argument to either of them.

It's at that point that Scott seems to give up. "Right." he replies, dully, after a very long moment of silence, before adding, as if on instinct, "Lets get out of here". And Pearl challenges him, "Lets?", because wasn't the whole premise that Pearl wasn't going to stick with him?

As they climb out of the bunker, Pearl seems to feel compelled- and it feels like guilt, to me- to talk again. She tells Scott that this is good for both of them, really, that Pearl's keeping them both alive. It's not..ditching him, it's a tactical split-up. Of course, it's hard to believe that when this argument came second to "I am ditching you and you deserve it". Maybe he's not thinking about it, or maybe he notices how frantic Pearl sounds to come up with something she can believe. Either way he doesn't mention the subtle backtracking.

Pearl asks why Scott is staying with the yellows. Scott replies- and he sounds..tired? For lack of a better word? And almost a little pained?- that he can't kill Cleo, he can't do it. Pearl argues that Scott doesn't have to kill Cleo, but I'm sure she knows that's semantics. Scott tells her that he can't help anyone kill Cleo either.

Pearl repeats that this is a strategic advantage, really. Scott is quiet for a long time. Uncharacteristically quiet when he says "Okay."

Pearl promises not to kill Cleo herself, but.."If I'm with the red team, I can't say I'm not gonna help them- Cleo's still on their yellow life, Scott, come on! They're fine!" Pearl laughs. It doesn't sound like a happy laugh. Scott doesn't reply to her statement directly, instead regaining some composure to tell Pearl that "The moments we got to be together, Pearl, were nice while they lasted", a sentiment Pearl echos.

"Tilly next time", Pearl jokes, laughing. It's too forced, and Scott doesn't give much of a laugh in return either. "I appreciate you." Pearl stops to say before she leaves, and Scott returns with "Tilly death do us part", a play on the pun Pearl made before, the same words Scott would say before blowing himself up to give Pearl the win she deserved more.

GUYS THIS SCENE IMPACTED ME IN A WAY NO OTHER LIFE SERIES SCENE HAS BEFORE THIS SCENE WILL NEVER LEAVE MY HEAD WHAT. This is why we need regular rewatches, people, otherwise we somehow forget incredibly deeply impactful characterization moments for our favorite characters???

Hi! If you're new here, I'm breaking down the wildcard powers more or less by alliance. The power charts are very much based on the webcomic Unordinary. Tag is #wild power breakdowns

Name: Tango Tek

Power: Super Speed - Gain the power of running really really fast! You can even run over water due to a frostwalker-like effect. Uses up a ton of energy though, requiring the user to stop and eat often while the ability is activated.

Notes: By far the most powerful ability, defeatable only by Impulse or his own stupidity. Flee with extra flee!

Name: Etho

Power: Mace to the Face - You have an infinite durability mace and refilling windcharges. Figure it out. (You also have increased windcharge jump height and take no fall damage when you land).

Name: “Bdubs” BdoubbleO100

Power: Time manipulation - Falling asleep magically makes it morning. You may also slow time for 15 seconds (perceived time).

Notes: While this power may seem weak, and is not as obviously useful as many others, it is a good support tool synergizing well with many other abilities.
